Animation Timeline:
30,000 B.C- 1500 A.D- Artifacts have been found that evidence how the idea of moving image began.
1500 A.D- Leonardo da Vinci created the Vitruvian Man drawings. These drawings show a variety of angles that can suggest movement.
1603- The magic lantern was created. It is an image projector that uses pictures on sheets of glass. Some of these sheets have moving parts. This is thought to be the first time projected animation was used.
1824- The Thaumatrope was introduced. This was made by having images on both sides of the rotating creation. When it was rotated, you can see the images being combined. This technique is known as the persistence of vision.
1831- The Phenakitoscope extended the ways of portraying movement. This made the illusion of movement by using spinning disks that were reflected in mirrors.
1834- The Zoetrope was made by using strips that were spun in a cylinder/ drum.
1868- The Flip-Book, also known as the Kineograph, is made by gathering together small pieces of paper. These papers are flipped to reveal the drawings from each page. This method was popular amongst Animators at the time.
1877- The idea of the Zoetrope developed the creation of the Movieola/ Praxinoscope. This method of creating animation required a variety of wheels that rotated the pictures.
1906- This was the first time stop motion photography was used to imply movement.
1914- Gertie the Dinosaur was the first cartoon that contained an interesting and appealing character.
1928- After Walt Disney had created Mickey Mouse. He decided to feature this character in a short cartoon called Steamboat Willie. This cartoon made an impact on Animation because this was the first cartoon that had used sound.
1937- Walt Disney also wanted to make a film based on the fairy-tale, Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs. The film was a success and it was the first feature film to use colour.
1964- A cartoon featuring the pink panther, called the Pink Phink, was a success. It won an award for the Best Short Film.
1986- Aardman used stop motion animation for Peter Gabriel's Sledgehammer music video.
1988- Who Framed Roger Rabbit was released. This film presents the combination of live action and 2D animation.
1987- The Simpsons was first aired at this time. It is now the longest running cartoon sitcom.
1990- The Grand Day Out animation short was aired on tv. It took 6 years to plan and create this short. It was the first time viewers watched Wallace and Gromit.
1995- Toy Story was the first film that only used computer animation.
2005- Wallace and Gromit's first feature film, The Curse of the Were- Rabbit, was made. It was released by DreamWorks. This film won awards for the Best Animated Feature Film and a BAFTA for Best British Film.
Researching the history of Animation has been useful because I've been able to see how animation has massively developed over time. I've learnt about the the variety of techniques and methods that can be used to make an animation. I can now start to consider how I am going to produce my own short animation.
